Influence relies on more than your title

Whether you’re a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond, you have the power to build influence. Influence doesn’t depend on the size of your organization or your title alone—it depends on how you engage with others and your presence.

Leaders in both small and large environments have the same potential to lead and make an impact. The key is understanding how to leverage your strengths to do so.

When I moved to New York, I was a small fish in a big pond. In my first job at FX Networks I was one of 3 people in a department. There was a lot of room to make an impact.

I focused on earning small wins. Those smaller successes led to big gains because they helped me build credibility and influence over time. They also helped me to project more confidence.

By demonstrating how I could do a lot with a little, I gained visibility. This gave me runway to build relationships and connections, so that people came to rely on and put their trust in me.

In every job I’ve had since, from agencies, to large organizations, and nonprofits, I’ve used this model to help build influence and trust. What mattered was my approach to building that influence, not how big or small the organization was.

It's about the intentional actions that you take, not a title. By being intentional in how you interact with others, how you present yourself, and how you contribute to the success of the team, you have the ability to influence and create opportunties for yourself and others.

Remember, small successes lead to big gains when it comes to building influence. And you can do that no matter where you sit.
