Unlock your Leadership Potential Starting with EQ

Today, there is an undeniable demand for emotional intelligence skills in today's leaders.

At a recent conference hosted by my local Chamber of Commerce, several HR leaders of national and regional organizations stated how behavioral interviewing where you focus on a person's skills like communication, problem solving, and stress management, among others, has become more critical than technical skills -- those required to do a job -- when considering people for leadership roles.

They also stated that there is a significant gap between the demand for these types of skills and the availability of them in the talent pool today.

The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs 2023 report lists several emotional intelligence attributes like self-awareness and resilience in it's top 10 skills and states that there is "evidence that businesses emphasize the importance of resilient and reflective workers embracing a culture of lifelong learning."

Having a high and balanced emotional intelligence enables you to thrive at work in terms of performance, relationships, with your teams and with clients. Higher performance can equate to being entrusted with more responsibility or higher pay, or advancing in your career.

When it comes to these types of skills, everyone has different strengths and opportunities for improvement. Trainings can help you understand more about them, but usually only get you so far in terms of practical skills application. To truly focus on your individual needs for leadership development, focused coaching is critical to cultivate and understand how you can leverage your stronger EQ skillsets to build and balance other essential ones.

I coach many people who are stuck; puzzled by their career stagnation, or trying to effectively more lead. Often they talk about how they have all the technical skills required. A deeper look usually reveals that EQ skills are the actual roadblock. Recognizing which EQ skills to improve is the first step towards getting unstuck and setting the stage for personal and professional growth.

The transformative power of coaching in effective leadership career success cannot be overstated. Personalized coaching that hones in on your individual EQ skills leads to securing promotions, landing new jobs, and becoming more effective as a leader.
